Chillingworth becomes the essence of evil when he sees the scarlet letter on Dimmesdale’s breast in Chapter 10, where there is “no need to ask how Satan comports himself when a precious human soul is lost to heaven, and won into his kingdom.”.

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne illustrates the life of Hester Prynne, a young woman who has committed the sin of adultery while living in a Puritan society in the late 1840s. The story then follows the conflicts between Hester’s ex-husband, secret paramour, and odd daughter Pearl.

However in The Scarlet Letter, Hester gains control in her relationship because her counsel will influence Dimmesdale’s life. This occurrence symbolically transfers the authority and power from men to Hester. Additionally, the minister highlights her strength and fortitude and recounts his despair. He narrates how he “(is) powerless to go.

The Scarlet Letter: RevengeRevenge is the act of retaliating in order to get even with someone for the wrongs they have done. In the novel “The Scarlet Letter,” the author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, uses Roger Chillingworth to reap revenge on Arthur Dimmesdale for his affair with his wife, Hester Prynne.

The antagonist in The Scarlet Letter is Roger Chillingworth. Roger is Hester’s husband, a scholar who is much older than Hester, sent Hester ahead to America, and Roger never made it to Boston. The majority opinion is that he got lost of sea. Roger arrives home on the day that his wife is publicly shamed and forced to wear the scarlet letter.

Chillingworth represents evil in The Scarlet Letter, as implied by Hawthorne throughout the novel. From the novel, we are told that the Black Man in the forest carries a leather book that is black in color and has clasps (Literature Resource Center 120). He hangs out in the forest at night and lures people to sign away their souls in his book.

Finally, Pearl’s role as the scarlet letter come to life was complete and she could go on to live a normal life with her mother. Pearl accomplished her God-given mission and helped to bring peace to her mother and her father.Without symbolism in the novel, the images presented would not be as potent.
