Part I: the adoration of the earth: The curtain rises to reveal young men and women in separate groups. Their surroundings are primitive and dominated by the dark forces of nature. At first the dances are light hearted but they slowly change to have more aggressive and savage movements.

Stravinsky uses orchestration in new and amazing ways in The Rite of Spring which still seem revolutionary even now. First there is the composition of the orchestra, which is large by any measure. Over-full complements of all instruments abound such as the scoring of four oboes as well as the inclusion of more unusual orchestral instruments in the score such as alto flute, Wagner tubas, bass.

The concept behind The Rite of Spring, developed by Roerich from Stravinsky’s outline idea, is suggested by its subtitle, “Pictures of Pagan Russia in Two Parts”; in the scenario, after various primitive rituals celebrating the advent of spring, a young girl is chosen as a sacrificial victim and dances herself to death.

Messiaen’s analysis of The Rite of Spring, especially his interpretation of the “Glorification of the Chosen One” and the “Sacrificial Dance” from which he developed his ideas about rhythmic characters, was his most brilliant work as a teacher, as attested to by his numerous former students.

The composer put the project to one side for a year while writing Petrushka, his second successful score for Diaghilev, before immersing himself in The Rite in the summer of 1911. The archaeologist and folklorist Nikolai Roerich was an integral part of the creative process, providing Stravinsky with drawings from scenes of historical rites.

The same year Bart6k's essay appeared, so did the biography of Stravinsky by Andr6 Schaeffner, which contained the revelation, im-parted to the author by the composer himself, that the opening bas-soon melody in The Rite of Spring was taken from an anthology of Lithuanian folk songs2 compiled by a Polish priest named Anton Jusz-kiewicz.

Stravinsky, throughout The Rite of Spring, gives powerful, rhythmic evidence that even in the shrieks, the thuds, the howls of the world, beauty can be found because the Opposites can be felt. Stravinsky was one of the most consciously philosophic of composers, and there is a statement of his, from his book, The Poetics of Music, that is beautiful.

The Rite of Spring does not really 'finish' in Part 1, as the orchestra just suddenly grind to a halt and Part II follows straight on. As in all Stravinsky's music, we see very little structure except when the initial theme is recapitulated near the end.

The Rite of Spring was to follow. No doubt lulled into a pleasant dreamy state by the earlier work, and expecting something similarly pastoral with the Rite, name after all about the most pelasant of seasons, they were in for a rude shock. A clue comes from its subtitle: Scenes from Pagan Russia.
